KINGSTON, Jamaica — Both defence attorneys, KD Knight and Deborah Martin in the fraud and money laundering charges against former junior energy minister Kern Spencer and his personal assistant Coleen Wright Monday morning expressed extreme confidence that the case would have been thrown out.

The court had a few moments earlier upheld a no-case submission against the two accused.

“We knew that no reasonable tribunal would convict on the evidence presented,” Knight said immediately after the court’s ruling.

“All along, based on what was disclosed there is no way that the Prosecution could have secured a conviction,” added Martin, Spencer’s attorney.

Spencer, a former People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament for North East St Elizabeth was accused of taking funds for the distribution of energy-saving light bulbs, a gift from the Cuban government, and putting the money to his personal use.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former Junior Energy Minister Kern Spencer, freed of fraud charges in the Cuban light bulb trial said Monday morning that he is “extremely elated with the ruling of the judge”.

Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey Monday upheld a no-case submission by the defence in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s court.

“From the onset I knew I was innocent, and have always a said so,” Spencer told OBSERVER ONLINE afterwards.

The former Peoples National Party (PNP) North east St Elizabeth MP said however that he was “a little bitter that six years of his life was taken away and everything placed on hold’.

The embattled Spencer was removed from the St Elizabeth seat which is now occupied by the PNP’s Raymond Pryce.

Spencer Monday said that his priority now is his family, especially his two sons in high school who have had to receive counselling because of the trauma from being ridiculed by schoolmates.

He added that he was also saddened by stories about his charges in the media and elsewhere, and the fact that his assistant Coleen Wright was also charged.

“She was one of the most decent people on the face of the earth,” said Spencer.

He revealed that he will be requesting of his attorneys that a press conference be convened to clear up all the misconceptions.

Spencer was accused of taking funds for the distribution of energy-saving light bulbs, a gift from the Cuban government, and putting the money to his personal use.
