POLICE WHO SHOT ALPHA STUDENTS GIVEN BAIL

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The five policemen who were arrested and charged with the shooting of a student of the Convent of Mercy (Alpha) were today granted bail when they appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

Kirk Hayes who was alleged to have fired the shot was granted bail in the sum of $1 million. The others – Shawn Abrahams, Dario Gillespie, Archibald Wright and Warren Ramsey – were granted bail in the sum of $500, 000.

They are to return to court on July 23.

The student was shot on Thursday, June 30 while on board a robot taxi at the intersection of North Street and Mark Lane in Kingston.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) said it received reports that the taxi operator was allegedly stopped by the police and after complying, the lawmen opened fire at the vehicle. One of the bullets hit the female student in the head.
The student underwent surgery at the Kingston Public Hospital and was recently taken out of the Intensive Care Unit.
