Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton says the ministry is investigating 13 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a severe condition that normally develops in persons affected by Zik-V.
GBS is an illness of the nervous system, which causes damage to the nerve cells, muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis.
At least 8 previously identified cases are already being monitored at the Spanish Town Hospital, the Kingston Public Hospital and the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Results as of June 1, showed that 3 patients tested negative for Zik-V.
The ministry says another 13 cases of GBS were recently identified, 6 of which tested negative for Zika.
The health minister stated that as the Zika Virus spreads, it is likely that the number of GBS Syndrome incidents will rise.
Dr. Tufton was responding to questions from Opposition Member Dr Dayton Campbell, in parliament yesterday.
The health minister adds that the ministry will be taking measures to increase the capability to manage GB Syndrome.
The minster says the health sector is stocking adequate supplies of the requisite medications, to treat not only GBS, but all forms of Zika virus manifestation.
The minister also said he will make available as soon as possible, the results of the other 7 cases of GBS, being tested for Zika Virus, to ensure that the situation is being properly monitored and under control.
Since last week, the cases of Zika virus in Jamaica has risen to 21, up from 16.
The new cases included 4 in the corporate area, and one in St Thomas.
