Kari Douglas, Councillor for the Trafalgar Division in the Kingston & St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), has crossed the floor to join the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), the majority party in the municipality.
Ms Douglas announced her decision at Tuesday morning’s monthly meeting of the KSAMC.
She was greeted with cheers from JLP councillors.
Ms Douglas, daughter of former MP and cabinet minister in People’s National Party (PNP), Easton Douglas, had supported Peter Bunting when he challenged the incumbent, Dr Peter Phillips, for the presidency of that party.
Dr Phillips narrowly staved off Mr Bunting’s challenge.
Statement
In a subsequent statement, Ms Douglas said she had been deeply concerned that the PNP had not displayed enough commitment to national development, listening to the people, and creating policies to meet their needs.
She said the PNP has instead become a political organization which is primarily focused on winning elections at any cost.
Miss Douglas said crossing the political aisle was not an easy decision given the tribal nature of Jamaica’s politics.
She declared that she had made the right decision, based on the performance of Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the JLP over the last few years.

I thought this country was a democratic country. Who said people are not allowed to think or make their own decision? I understand people maybe hurt over her decision to cross the floor but you’ll get over it. People should be put in for their performance and not just for a name.
