A tie vote by the Supreme Court is blocking President Barack Obama’s immigration plan that sought to shield millions living in the U.S. illegally from deportation.
The justices’ one-sentence opinion on Thursday effectively kills the plan for the duration of Obama’s presidency.
A tie vote sets no national precedent but leaves in place the ruling by the lower court. In this case, the federal appeals court in New Orleans said the Obama administration lacked the authority to shield up to 4 million immigrants from deportation and make them eligible for work permits without approval from Congress.
Texas led 26 Republican-dominated states in challenging the program Obama announced in November 2014. Congressional Republicans also backed the states’ lawsuit.
The Obama administration announced the programs — protections for parents of children who are in the country legally and an expansion of the program that benefits people who were brought to this country as children — in November 2014. Obama decided to move forward after Republicans won control of the Senate in the 2014 midterm elections, and the chances for an immigration overhaul, already remote, were further diminished.
The Senate had passed a broad immigration bill with Democratic and Republican support in 2013, but the measure went nowhere in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives.
The states quickly went to court to block the Obama initiatives.
Their lawsuit was heard by U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen in Brownsville, Texas. Hanen previously had criticized the administration for lax immigration enforcement. Hanen sided with the states, blocking the programs from taking effect. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also ruled for the states, and the Justice Department rushed an appeal to the high court so that it could be heard this term.

Sad for a lot of hard working illegal immigrants and children who came here from young whose parents (some ignorant) never paid attention to certain issues and expected things to ALWAYS remain the same.
Line jumpers! They ducked the embassy harassment, fees and medical process, cause salaries to drop because they willing to work for less and benefit from the monies paid into the Treasury by those who went through the full process or born here legitimately.

That’s crazy I believe that children whose brought here long ago by their parents should be able to remain in the country and work and eventually become citizens… They shouldn’t be the subject of having to go back to a place they do no longer know and most likely probably have no family they can depend on if in fact they are returned to their home lands… I wouldn’t want my uncles or any other family member whose has held a life and a job and doing their best to stay as model citizen and get their paper works in order to be shipped back home to Panama… At anytime me being a citizen can be shipped back home and taking my rights away if I commit a crime that California doesn’t seem minor… I hope the immigration laws and policies are really looked at and that it truly benefits the good people that just want to be left alone to live their life and provide for their children… This is suppose to be the land of the free… as they claim it to be…
Nothing is free, there’s always a price to pay.
Minors brought here and educated under the name and social of a citizen should get immunity. Ones who continued the farce as adults should not be granted immunity.
Although, many earned diplomas and degrees under assumed names, and should get it in their rightful name on the way out because that was earned by physical work no matter the name. Then again, the rightful owner of that name and social may have incurred damages due to someone else eating out their birthright benefits such as SSI, financial aid or even obtained travel documents, medical records and criminal records. Being illegal is costly to others. Communities suffer because of inaccurate census.
Its funny how people would run off to a new country some with barely anything and some how find their way around and eventually establish something, but the thought of going to Jamaica or going BACK to Jamaica to do the same thing is unbearable. They feel like they cant make it, they feel like its the worst place on earth they feel they will suffer. I HAD A PROFESSOR ONE TIME COMPLAINED THAT HIS PROPERTY TAX IN LONG ISLAND HAD GONE UP BECAUSE OF THE INFLUX OF ILLEGALS FLOODING THEIR SCHOOL DISTRICT. THE CRIME IS THERE HARD BECAUSE SOME OF HAVE TO SURVIVE.
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASON FRAUD IS A BIG ISSUE. THEY MAKING ALL THESE EXCUSES ABOUT BETTER LIFE. IS IT FAIR THAT AN ILLEGAL WHO NEVER PAID TAX BENEFIT OFF FOOD STAMPS, SSI, AND ETC. GET TO GO TO SCHOOL AND ETC…IS IT FAIR FOR ME, MY PARENTS, UNCLE, SISTER, BROTHER WHO FILED AND PAID THEIR MONEY TO BECOME PERMANENT RESIDENTS.
