THE EDITOR, Sir:
The recent murder of 17-year-old Dwayne Jones, a cross-dresser, has triggered additional cries from the homosexual minority for justice. The murder of one so young, coming into his own and is discovering himself is sad, and like all the murders – gay-related or not – it signifies the moral decay of the society.
My concern is why would Dwayne, knowing the homophobic society in which he lives, chose to attend a dance catering to ‘straight’ patrons to flaunt his choice? Though disguised, and very well so it would seem, I believe he was in violation of the norm of that dancehall culture. I have observed that a dance does three things: affirms masculinity, affirms femininity and ‘bun out badmind’. Dwayne violated the first two.
Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community should understand their role to protect themselves while understanding and respecting that the general populace is not wholly embracing of their practices and way of life.
