Court remands man for raping 15-year-old girl

The Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court 3 has remanded a 32-year-old man, John Joseph, in a correctional centre for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl.

Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat, who did not take the plea of the accused, ordered that he should be remanded pending advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

Joseph, who lives at No. 6B Felix Street, Ijagemo Road, Ijegun area of the state, was charged with one count of sexual assault and defilement of the teenage girl.

The police prosecutor, ASP Benson Emuerhi, said the accused committed the crime on July 17, 2017, and March 2019 at the same address.

According to Emuerhi, the offence is punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The one count read, “That you, John Joseph, on July 17, 2017, and sometime in March 2019, at No. 6B Felix Street, Ijagemo Road, Ijegun, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully defile the 15-year-old victim, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

Sule-Amzat adjourned the proceedings till January 20, 2020.
