EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD STABBED TO DEATH IN CLARENDON

The police say they are following several leads in the murder of 18 year old Clarendon College student Avinash Gordon.

Avinash was found with stab wounds at her home in the Bushy Park Housing Scheme in May Pen, shortly after 2 o’clock Thursday morning.

Superintendent David White, head of the Clarendon Police, told RJR News that detectives are hoping to make an early breakthrough in the case.

Reports from the police are that the teenager was at home with two other girls.

The girls, who were in a separate room, reported hearing strange sounds, then screams coming from Avinash’s room sometime after 2 o’clock.

They called the police.

The injured 18 year old was found in her room.

It’s reported that there was no forced entry at the house.

It is understood that her mother was not at home at the time as she works in another parish.

Her father is a police detective.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid, in a statement Thursday afternoon, said it is a challenging moment for the school community of Clarendon College.

He said Avinash was a student of great promise, who was well-liked by her peers and teachers.

She was in her final year of high school, pursuing the sciences in the hope of becoming a medical doctor.

“It’s truly heartbreaking, not just to her parents, but to this country, that the life of a teen with such great potential was cut short,” Mr. Reid lamented. “I extend my sympathy to her family, friends, school colleagues and staff at the Clarendon College.”

Clarendon College principal David Wilson characterised Avinash as a polite, jovial and cordial student who was always involved in school activities.

Rosemarie Thompson Tucker, the school’s guidance counsellor, concurred, adding that Avinash was lively, had a wonderful smile and a welcoming personality.

Students at Clarendon College had to be counselled on Thursday morning after hearing the news of her death.
