BLACKMAN FROM CLANSMAN GANG HELD

Clansman gang leader “Blackman” again remanded

Alleged Clansman gang leader Andre Bryan was again remanded when he appeared before Home Circuit Court on Friday afternoon.

Mr. Bryan, otherwise called “Blackman”, was charged last month during a crackdown on members of the Spanish Town based gang.

Mr. Bryan’s mother, Millicent Brown, his brother, Kevaughn Green, along with three members of the gang – Alicia Brown, Davion Edwards and Boswell Rhoden – were also remanded.

Mr. Bryan is charged with leading a criminal organisation, while the others are charged with participating in a criminal organisation.

Defence attorney Oswest Senior-Smith, who is representing Alicia Brown, applied for bail, but this was rejected by the presiding judge.

Prosecutors reported that Ms Brown, who is employed as a clerical officer at the National Water Commission, was involved in renting properties in upscale communities for members of the Clansman gang.

They say Ms Brown, who earned a monthly salary of $53,000, rented a property for members of the gang for $180,000 per month at a gated apartment in Kingsway, St. Andrew.

She also rented a town house on Shortwood Road in St. Andrew for $150,000 per month.

Prosecutors say Ms Brown paid $300,000 upfront to rent the townhouse where Mr. Bryan and his mother were held.

In applying for bail, Mr. Senior-Smith argued that there is no evidence that his client was involved in any illegal activity or with members of the Clansman gang.

He argued that Ms Brown shared quarters with other persons and was paying her portion of the rent.

Mr. Senior-Smith added that his client, who lives in Spanish Town, St. Catherine should not be penalised for wanting to live in an upscale community in St. Andrew.

The judge argued that she considered Ms Brown a flight risk and ordered her remanded.

Bail application for the other accused is set for next Friday.

State of Emergency

In the meantime, several members of the Clansman gang are among 50 people charged under the State of Public Emergency in the St. Catherine North division.

The State of Public Emergency was declared last month in response to a flare up of violence by the Clansman gang.

The gang has been linked to murders, shootings and extortion in Spanish Town and Linstead in St. Catherine and May Pen, Clarendon.

Too many gangsters and gunmen in Jamaica get representation from the most expensive lawyers. Where is this money coming from? Senators and QCs don’t come cheap, not even to write a letter much less attend court on your behalf.
