Inmate, accomplice charged in overseas employment scam
An inmate at one of the island’s correctional facilities, along with an accomplice, was yesterday charged by detectives from Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) for conspiracy to defraud and obtaining money by false pretence.
Garcia Perez, who goes by the names Jeffery Bondah and Harris Haughton, along with Susan Green-McLaughlin are alleged to have swindled money from people under the pretence of providing jobs overseas.
In March 2017 investigators from MOCA began probing reports that members a company were swindling money from people under the pretence of providing jobs overseas.
Subsequently investigations revealed that the person said to be the chief executive officer of the company is currently serving time on a fraud conviction.
The investigation revealed the entire enterprise was a scam and this led to the arrest and charge of Green-McLaughlin and Perez, who is incarcerated.
Green-McLaughlin was offered bail in the sum of $50,000. Both will appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday August 10.
Members of the public who feel they may have been victims of this scam are being urged by the police to visit the MOCA office to make a report, as investigation into the matter continues.
