Recommendation comes for persons convicted of sex offences overseas to
It has been recommended that it should be made mandatory for persons convicted of sexual offences overseas to notify the Jamaican authorities and be placed on the sex offender’s registry.
The committee which reviewed Jamaica’s Sexual Offences Act, in its report to Parliament noted that in cases where persons are deported, such information would be communicated to the Ministry of National Security.
However, it said in cases where persons relocated to Jamaica on their own, there would be no state-to-state sharing.
Committee members reportedly agreed that the Act should be amended to create an obligation for people who were convicted of a sexual offence overseas or have been listed on a sex offender’s registry abroad to report this information to the relevant authorities.
This means people failing to report to the authorities would be guilty of an offence.
