Olympic bronze medallist Warren Weir and Jevaughn Minzie are to switch camps when pre season training resumes in the fall. It’s understood that Weir will leave the Glen Mills-coached Racers Track Club for Florida while Minzie will head to the nearby MVP Track Club. In a report in Tuesday’s Gleaner, veteran athletics coach Glen Mills, the Racers founder confirmed that Weir informed him last week that he intends to leave the island and continue his training overseas.
According to mills the 28 year old sprinter is not happy with the current climate in Jamaica, and feels he is a target resulting in him wanting a different environment. The former Calabar high school standout will be moving to Florida to join Lance Brauman, who now coaches Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo and sprinter Noah Lyles of the United States.
Since his silver medal performance at the Moscow World Championships in 2013, Weir has struggled to find top form, except for a runner-up placnig in the half lap event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Mills also told the Gleaner that the former Bog Walk stand out Minzie informed him that he would be moving to the Stephen and Paul Francis-coached MVP Track Club.
Minzie made it to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil after finishing third at the national championships that year but hasn’t run that fast since.
