Court Reports

A fruit vendor was hauled before the court for reportedly stealing his motorbike after he went to the station and took the bike after it was seized by the police.

Shriekman Ashman, 27, of McIntryre Villa in Kingston was recently arrested and charged with simple larceny.

According to allegations, on November 4 Ashman was riding along Duke Street around 2:30 pm when he was stopped by the police for an alleged traffic breach. His documents were requested and the police reportedly found that he had no insurance, no fitness certificate and no registration. As a result the bike was seized.

However, the police after taking the bike to the Central Police Station, discovered that it was missing. As a result a search was carried out at Ashman’s house and the bike was found at the rear of the building.

But Ashman’s attorney Davorna Wilson, during her bail application, told Judge Collin that the Crown had not made out its case against her client and that he could not steal his own bike.

She also told the judge that Ashman had a mental problem but would turn up for his case if granted bail.

Ashman was subsequently granted bail in the sum of $100,000 and his mother was ordered by the court to carry him to a psychiatrist to do an evaluation.

The case was set back for mention on December 14.
